Welcome
Call to Worship
Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God;For it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful.
Psalm 147:1
Hymn # 164 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
1 O for a thousand tongues to singmy great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace.
2 My gracious Master and my God,assist me to proclaim,to spread through all the earth abroadthe honors of thy name.
3 Jesus, the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease;'tis music in the sinner's ears,'tis life and health and peace.
4 He breaks the pow'r of reigning sin,he sets the pris'ner free;his blood can make the foulest clean, his blood availed for me.
5 He speaks and, list'ning to his voice, new life the dead receive;the mournful, broken hearts rejoice;the humble poor believe.
6 Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, your loosen'd tongues employ;ye blind, behold your Savior come;and leap, ye lame, for joy.
Call To Confession
And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image...5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.
7 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
12 Honor your father and your mother.
13 You shall not murder.
14 You shall not commit adultery.
15 You shall not steal.
16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 You shall not desire...anything that is your neighbor’s.
I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You
In a time when You may be found.
Psalm 32:5–6 (NKJV)
Confession of Sins
Let us, therefore, confess our sin, saying together:
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me... Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities” through Jesus your Son. Amen.
Word of Assurance
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
Psalm 103:11–13 (NKJV):
Song of Renewal
Gracious God my heart renew,
Make my spirit right and true;
Cast me not away from thee,
Let thy Spirit dwell in me;
Thy salvation's joy impart.
Steadfast make my willing heart.
#486, stanza 5 (Ps 51:10-11)
Scripture Lesson: Philippians 2:1-11
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Sermon
Hymn # 163 At the Name of Jesus
1 At the name of Jesus ev'ry knee shall bow,ev'ry tongue confess him King of Glory now.'Tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word.
2 At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way,all the heav'nly orders in their great array.
3 Humbled for a season to receive a namefrom the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed.
4 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdueall that is not holy, all that is not true:crown him as your Captain in temptation's hour:let his will enfold you in its light and pow'r.
5 Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory, with his angel train;for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now.
Prayer of the Church and the Lord’s Prayer
“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
Hymn # 301 Join All the Glorious Names
1 Join all the glorious namesof wisdom, love, and pow'r,that ever mortals knew, that angels ever bore:all are too poor to speak his worth, too poor to set my Savior forth.
2 Great Prophet of my God,my tongue would bless thy name:by thee the joyful newsof our salvation came, the joyful news of sins forgiv'n,of hell subdued, and peace with heav'n.
3 Jesus, my great High Priest, offered his blood and died;my guilty conscience seeksno sacrifice beside:his pow'rful blood did once atoneand now it pleads before the throne.
4 Thou art my Counselor,my pattern, and my Guide, and thou my Shepherd art;O keep me near thy side;nor let my feet e'er turn astrayto wander in the crooked way.
5 My Savior and my Lord,my Conqu'ror and my King, thy scepter and thy sword, thy reigning grace, I sing:thine is the pow'r; behold I sit in willing bonds beneath thy feet.
Benediction
