Welcome

Call to Worship

Oh sing to the Lord a new song;

sing to the Lord, all the earth!

Sing to the Lord, bless his name;

tell of his salvation from day to day.

Psalm 96:1–2 (ESV):

Hymn # 164 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

1 O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace. 2 My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name. 3 Jesus, the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life and health and peace. 4 He breaks the pow'r of reigning sin, he sets the pris'ner free; his blood can make the foulest clean, his blood availed for me. 5 He speaks and, list'ning to his voice, new life the dead receive; the mournful, broken hearts rejoice; the humble poor believe. 6 Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, your loosen'd tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Savior come; and leap, ye lame, for joy.

Call To Confession

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For,

“Whoever would love life and see good days

must keep their tongue from evil

and their lips from deceitful speech.

They must turn from evil and do good;

they must seek peace and pursue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous

and his ears are attentive to their prayer,

but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

1 Peter 3:8–12 citing Psalm 34:12-16 (NIV):

Confession of Sins

Let us pray to the Lord confessing our sin, saying together:

Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord;

may your love and faithfulness always protect me.

For troubles without number surround me;

my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.

They are more than the hairs of my head,

and my heart fails within me.

Be pleased to save me, Lord;

come quickly, Lord, to help me.

Psalm 40:11–13 (NIV)

Word of Comfort

As we are weary and burdened by our sin and our troubles, our Lord Jesus says to us:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV)

Song of Renewal

Jesus! I do now receive him, more than all in him I find; he hath granted me forgiveness, I am his, and he is mine.

Hallelujah! what a Savior! Hallelujah, what a Friend! Saving, helping, keeping, loving, he is with me to the end.

Trinity Hymnal # 498, stanza 5

Scripture Lessons:

Colossians 1:13–18

13 He has delivered us from the authority of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the son of his love,14 in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn (inheritor) of all creation.16For by him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through him and for him.17 And he is before all things, and in him all things are held together.18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the ruler, the firstborn (inheritor) from the dead, that in all things he may be first.

Colossians 2:6–10

6 As, therefore, you have received the Christ, Jesus, the Lord, so in him walk, 7 rooted and built on in him and made firm in the faith, just as you have been taught, abounding with thanksgiving.

8 Watch lest anyone capture you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the (human) world, and not according to Christ.

9 For in him dwells all the fullness of deity bodily; 10 and you are full in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Sermon

Hymn # 646 Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts

1 Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou fount of life, thou light of men, from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again.

2 Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; thou savest those that on thee call; to them that seek thee thou art good, to them that find thee all in all.

3 We taste thee, O thou living bread, and long to feast upon thee still; we drink of thee, the fountain-head, and thirst our souls from thee to fill.

4 Our restless spirits yearn for thee, where'er our changeful lot is cast; glad when thy gracious smile we see, blest when our faith can hold thee fast.

5 O Jesus, ever with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark night of sin away, shed o'er the world thy holy light.

Prayer of the Church and the Lord’s Prayer

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

Hymn (insert) What Wondrous Love Is This (TPH 343) (1-2)

1 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul, what wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

2 When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down, sinking down; when I was sinking down beneath God's righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul!

The Apostles' Creed page 845

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord's Supper

Hymn (insert) What Wondrous Love Is This (TPH 343) (3-4)

3 To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing, to God and to the Lamb, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM, while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, while millions join the theme, I will sing!

4 And when from death I'm free, I'll sing on, I'll sing on, and when from death I'm free, I'll sing on; and when from death I'm free, I'll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I'll sing on, I'll sing on, and through eternity I'll sing on!

Benediction
