Updated: Nov 26, 2023

Welcome

Call to Worship

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

Psalm 136:1

Hymn # 125 Let All Things Now Living

1 Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving

to God our Creator triumphantly raise;who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,

who guides us and leads to the end of our days,His banners are o'er us, his light goes before us,

a pillar of fire shining forth in the night,‘till shadows have vanished and darkness is banished,

as forward we travel from light into light.

2 His law he enforces: the stars in their courses,

the sun in its orbit obediently shine; The hills and the mountains, the rivers and fountains,

the deeps of the ocean proclaim him divine. We too, should be voicing our love and rejoicing,

with glad adoration, a song let us raise,‘till all things now living unite in thanksgiving

to God in the highest, hosanna and praise!

Call To Confession

And God spoke all these words, saying:

2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 You shall have no other gods before Me.

4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image...5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

7 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

12 Honor your father and your mother.

13 You shall not murder.

14 You shall not commit adultery.

15 You shall not steal.

16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 You shall not desire...anything that is your neighbor’s.

I acknowledged my sin to You,

And my iniquity I have not hidden.

I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”

And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You

In a time when You may be found.

Psalm 32:5–6 (NKJV)

Confession of Sins

Let us, therefore, confess our sin, saying together:

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me... Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities” through Jesus your Son. Amen.

Word of Assurance

For as the heavens are high above the earth,

So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;

As far as the east is from the west,

So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

As a father pities his children,

So the Lord pities those who fear Him.

Psalm 103:11–13 (NKJV):

Song of Renewal

Gracious God my heart renew,

Make my spirit right and true;

Cast me not away from thee,

Let thy Spirit dwell in me;

Thy salvation's joy impart.

Steadfast make my willing heart.

#486, stanza 5 (Ps 51:10-11)

Scripture Lesson: Philippians 1:12-26

12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill: 16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; 17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

19 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.

Sermon

Hymn # 499 Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

1 Rock of Ages, cleft for melet me hide myself in thee;let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed,be of sin the double cure, cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.

2 Not the labors of my handscan fulfil thy law's demands;could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, all for sin could not atone;thou must save, and thou alone.

3 Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling;naked, come to thee for dress;helpless, look to thee for grace;foul, I to the Fountain fly;wash me, Savior, or I die.

4 While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyelids close in death, when I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne,Rock of Ages, cleft for me,let me hide myself in thee.

Prayer of the Church and the Lord’s Prayer

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

Hymn # 691 It Is Well with My Soul

1 When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll;whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,"It is well, it is well with my soul."

Refrain:It is well with my soul;it is well, it is well with my soul.

2 Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and has shed his own blood for my soul.

[Refrain]

3 My sin– O the bliss of this glorious thought!–my sin, not in part, but the whole,is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more;praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

[Refrain]

4 O Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll, the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;"Even so"– it is well with my soul.

[Refrain]

Benediction
