Worship Service for October 22, 2023

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

Welcome

Call to Worship You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!

Psalm 22:23

Hymn # 9 All You That Fear Jehovah’s Name 1 All you that fear Jehovah's name, his glory tell, his praise proclaim; you children of his chosen race, stand in awe before his face, stand in awe before his face.

2 The suff'ring One he has not spurned, who unto him for help has turned; from him he has not hid his face, but answered his request in grace, but answered his request in grace.

3 O Lord, your goodness makes me raise amid your people songs of praise; before all them that fear you, now I worship you and pay my vow, I worship you and pay my vow.

4 For all the meek you will provide; they shall be fed and satisfied; all they that seek the Lord shall live and never-ending praises give, and never-ending praises give.

5 The Lord's unfailing righteousness all generations shall confess; from age to age shall men be taught what wondrous works the Lord has wrought, what wondrous works the Lord has wrought.

Call To Confession Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Romans 12:9–14 (NKJV):

Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You that You may be feared.

Psalm 130:1–4 (NKJV)

Confession of Sins Let us, therefore, confess our sin, saying together: Merciful Heavenly Father, pardon us our many sins; the sins we know and the sins hidden from our conscience. Cleanse us from wrong motives and forgive us for feeble obedience. By your Spirit renew our hearts to love you, our minds to know you, and our wills to obey you. For we ask this mercy in the name of your Son who shed his blood for us. Amen. Word of Assurance God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

Romans 5:8–9 (NKJV)

Song of Renewal My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ the solid rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.

Trinity Hymnal # 521, stanza 1

Scripture Lessons: Philippians 1:1-5 1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now

Sermon Hymn # 347 The Church’s One Foundation 1 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word: from heav'n he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

2 Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with ev'ry grace endued.

3 Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

4 The church shall never perish! Her dear Lord to defend, to guide, sustain, and cherish, is with her to the end; though there be those that hate her, and false sons in her pale, against or foe or traitor she ever shall prevail.

5 'Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 6 Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Prayer of the Church and the Lord’s Prayer

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

Hymn # 359 Blest Be the Tie That Binds

1 Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love: the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

2 Before the Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares.

3 We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear, and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.

4 When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again.

5 This glorious hope revives our courage by the way, while each in expectation lives, and longs to see the day.

6 From sorrow, toil and pain, and sin, we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.

Benediction
